Buying Tips

Are You Making Any Of These 5 Mistakes Buying a New Central Heating & Cooling System?

Buying a new unit because you've been told you have a "bad" or "dead" compressor (This is called "condemning") when, in fact the problem may be only an inexpensive part. As many as 24% of these condemned compressors actually have NO problem. The real problem was diagnosed wrong.

  • Having your new system installed without proper sizing for total comfort can cause excessive condensation on windows which leads to moisture in the wood work, fabrics, carpet and air. This turns into moldy smells, swelled wood and high energy bills. If the unit you install is too large for the square footage of your home, the cycles of the thermostat will be too short due to quick cooling or heating of the area. With this you will experience condensation, high energy bills, and being too cold or too hot. The best way to avoid this problem is to have an energy audit / load calculation done before you purchase a new central air system. Any good HVAC company will offer this to you at no cost. Also, DO NOT allow a company to sell you a unit based on the square footage of your home.
  • Buying a unit that's too efficient! Some people are sold a unit that will never pay for itself. You'd be better off putting the extra money in a CD. A new unit with a good SEER rating will save you money on your energy bill, giving you the money back that you spent for a new unit.
  • Buying a more efficient unit on time payments where the interest rates are more than the extra savings. Time payments are great (but only) if the interest is less than the increased savings.
  • Buying a central air system that's not efficient enough. In some cases you can turn $100 into $1000 by investing in a system that exactly matches your home and lifestyle.

I believe you should have all the facts before investing in a new central air system to replace your old one.
